At International Language Academy, we help our students learn another language in a quick and effective way. This is achieved through our beliefs and approaches adopted in teaching a language.
Understanding the Basics
For an adult to effectively learn another language, an experienced teacher knowledgeable in the deployment of appropriate andragogy, plays a critical role. Amongst other learning theories, teachers must understand the prevalence of inter-language, the inherent language system in the mind of a second-language learner (SLL). SLL tend to rely on their prior (first) language experience to construct the new language. Unfortunately, it does not usually lead
to the correct construct of the second language. Over generalizing or over simplification are also linguistic issues that SLL grapple with when learning a second language.
Conducting the Lesson
Lessons are conducted using dual language methodology (English and a foreign language). At the beginner level, the ratio of foreign language used to English is lower and at higher level, it increases progressively. Strings of words or common set phrases in a given lesson theme form the building block for acquisition of conversational skills. The constant usage and gentle guidance of the appropriate language construct by the teacher in class rapidly builds up a student’s confidence. This in turn encourages the student to explore and experiment with different and more varied means of expression – leading to higher language fluidity and competency.
Learning made Easy
As students find themselves gradually being immersed in the environment with constant exposure to the language-concerned, memorization of words, correct syntaxes embedded in strings of sentences are ‘naturally’ assimilated. The teacher further facilitate the learning process through providing meaningful and practical learning tips, opportunities for interaction and build good rapport with all students. This essentially creates a great learning environment. To further facilitate the assimilation of the language, it is recommended that students use the language regularly. Watching videos / movies also helps!
